Chapters Transcript Video Life’s Essential 8: AHA's Enhanced Approach to Measuring, Monitoring and Modifying Cardiovascular Health Back to Symposium Hello everybody. My name is Gary MMA Sharma. I'm a cardiologist at johns Hopkins and I'm here to tell you about a new update from the american heart Association on the definition of cardiovascular health. Um, the definition of cardiovascular health was first coined by the American Heart Association in 2010, which included seven behaviors and health risk factors. This year, a new presidential advisory by the american Heart Association updated the definition of cardiovascular health to include another metric, which is overall sleep health or the duration of sleep uh to make life's simple seven into life's Essential Eight. And this ESSENTIAL eights are diet physical activity, blood glucose, body mass, index, blood lipids, blood pressure, nicotine exposure and sleep health. These metrics have been well studied and validated to be very similar to life's simple seven in predicting cardiovascular outcomes. And I think this was a really great move by the american Heart Association since sleep health and as we know, sleep apnea and lack of sleep does impact cardiovascular health and cardiovascular outcomes. We have so much data now about the impact of poor sleep or sleep apnea and sleep disorders to be associated with cardiovascular outcomes such as myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation and heart failure. So encouraging physicians and patients and clinicians and just the overall workforce to be aware of life's essential eight is a really bold and a great move by the American Heart Association. One important step also is to recognize the importance of psychological health and mental disorders and how they impact cardiovascular health as well as social determines of health and how we live where we live, and to impact cardiovascular health as well. So these were the three key. Take home points from the HHS presidential advisory. To find out more. Plus, please come join us um at the H. A.
