Rubenstein Precision Medicine Center of Excellence – Research Update from Daniel Sun, M.D. Otolaryngologist Daniel Sun discusses his research, which focuses on the delivery of drugs to the inner ear. my research tries Thio overcome a very difficult challenge we face right now in treating hearing loss, which is getting drugs to the right place at the right time. Uh, in patients drugs into the inner ear where we send sound. My research uses something called magnetic nanoparticles to beam or to be able to more effectively direct drugs including genes and proteins to where they need to go, um, to treat hearing loss in the delicate cells that sound in our in their year. So one advantage off using magnetic nanoparticles is that we envision being able to apply my next field to drive these particles into the inner ear and to exactly where they need to go in the inner ear so that the right drugs can get to the right place at the right time. Because this is not something that has been explored in any capacity before. Uh, this is something that, uh, eyes fairly new for our field. The Rubenstein give find was really critical in, uh, allowing us to pursue such high risk, high reward research where, uh, ih funding would not be available with our program round of funding we've actually collected. Um promising early results in terms off how these particles can deliver genes, um, that otherwise could not be delivered into the inner ear. So in the future, we're looking to optimize the performance of these particles so that they can't do a better job off delivering genes that can treat here hearing loss. And then we also look forward thio, uh, moving the, uh, designing them as, uh, delivery vehicles that can deliver proteins into the inner ear. Proteins have been shown to be able to reverse some of the effects off age related hearing loss, so we're very excited about that. Well, another benefit off the gift fund is that allows, uh, clinicians and scientists who come together to tackle challenges like the dream of hearing loss. For instance, in our delivery work, we started collaborating with Dr Julie Mueller, who is also a member off the Rubenstein team. And together we are looking at using this particle system to treat usher syndrome. Kids, uh, just kids with usher syndrome are born with deafness. Right now, there is no treatment that can restore their hearing, and in the future, we look thio apply this technology to treat age related hearing loss as well in adults Created by Related Presenters
