Sheela Natesh Magge, MD, MSCE

Sheela N. Magge, MD, MSCE is the Director of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Lawson Wilkins endowed chair, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics (PAR) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. 

Her clinical interests include all endocrine disorders in children and adolescents, and particularly, type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, obesity, congenital insulin resistance syndromes, congenital lipodystrophy, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Dr. Magge completed her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at Harvard University, and then went on to Yale Medical School. She completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Boston, and then her pediatric endocrinology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she also completed a Masters degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  Dr. Magge stayed on at CHOP until 2014, when she moved to Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC).  At CNMC, Dr. Magge was Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Director of Research for the Division of Endocrinology, Associate Director of the Center for Translational Science, Chair of the Scientific Review Committee, and Director of the Clinical Research Center of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Children’s National.

Dr. Magge is a clinician investigator focusing her patient-oriented research on the areas of pediatric obesity, insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, and type 2 diabetes, as well as the cardiovascular complications of these conditions.  In 2007, Dr. Magge was awarded an NIH K23 award, “Dyslipidemia and CVD Risk in Pediatric Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes”, and is currently co-Principal Investigator of a NICHD R01 study of cardiometabolic risk and obesity in adolescents with Down syndrome, awarded in 2012. Dr. Magge is a co-investigator for an NIH Bench-to-Bedside Award, “Therapeutic Targets in African-American Youth with Type 2 Diabetes,” examining ancestry related differences in treatment response for pediatric type 2 diabetes. She also has a pending R01 application studying cardiometabolic risk in South Asian adolescents compared to African American and White peers. Dr. Magge’s expertise led to her being appointed in 2012 to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition. She has numerous peer-reviewed publications in the areas of pediatric obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. She also was chosen to lead a “committee of experts” on pediatric prediabetes by the Pediatric Endocrine Society, trying to identify best practice for this condition.

Dr. Magge was elected to the Society for Pediatric Research in 2014.  She is also a member of the American Diabetes Association, Pediatric Endocrine Society, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
