Dr. Seth Martin received a Bachelor of Science degree from Washington and Lee University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and train in internal medicine at Duke University.

While completing a cardiology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Martin was designated the Marie-Josée & Henry R. Kravis Cardiovascular Fellow and served as a Pollin Cardiovascular Prevention Fellow. During his fellowship, Dr. Martin obtained a Master of Health Science degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was also awarded the Howard S. Silverman Award for originality and creativity in medical research, and the American College of Cardiology recognized him as an Up and Coming Future Star of Cardiology.

Dr. Martin joined the Johns Hopkins cardiology faculty in 2015. He is a core faculty member at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, where he directs the Advanced Lipid Disorders Program and the Digital Health Innovations Lab. Dr. Martin serves as co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Technology and Innovation, which is part of the American Heart Association’s Strategically Focused Research Networks. Dr. Martin is also an associate faculty member at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research and an affiliate faculty member at the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare.

With research grounded in preventive cardiology, Dr. Martin focuses on multiple complementary areas including digital/mobile health technology, lipidology, cardiovascular risk assessment, big data and precision medicine. Using a database of more than 1 million patients, he led the development of an algorithm for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol estimation that was externally validated and has been adopted in clinical practice. He completed the National Institutes of Health mobile health training institute and founded a mobile health interest group at Johns Hopkins. He has also mentored numerous trainees in clinical research and innovation, and in 2020, the Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine honored him with the Frederick L. Brancati Excellence in Mentoring Award.

A dedicated clinician and clinical educator, Dr. Martin is a member of the Johns Hopkins bedside medicine faculty. He is an attending physician at The Johns Hopkins Hospital on the general cardiology service, cardiology consult service and the Osler medical service. He is also a firm faculty clinical coach and educator for the Osler medical residency’s Janeway firm. At the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center, he sees patients in the lipid and preventive cardiology clinics.

Dr. Martin has published more than 230 articles in leading cardiology and medicine journals, as well as 15 book chapters. He contributed to an update on preventive cardiology published in Braunwald’s Heart Disease: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine. He is an associate editor of the American College of Cardiology’s Dyslipidemia Clinical Community and the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, and he has been a guest editor for the journals Circulation and NPJ Digital Medicine.

Dr. Martin was selected as one of 125 faculty members, fellows, postdocs, staff members and students who personify Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission to improve the health of the community and the world by setting the standard of excellence in medical education, research and clinical care, in celebration of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s 125th anniversary.
