Dr. Akhavan is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Urology and Director of Pediatric Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. While Dr. Akhavan treats children with all urological disorders, he specializes in robotic, laparoscopic, and endoscopic surgery of the kidney, ureter, bladder, gonads and genitals.  As an expert in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic pyeloplasty, robotic ureteral reimplantation, and endoscopic stone surgery, Dr. Akhavan strives to minimize patient discomfort, reduce recovery time, and optimize patient outcomes.

Academically, Dr. Akhavan has published over 60 scientific articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts, and has lectured throughout the country on pediatric urology and minimally invasive surgery.  Dr. Akhavan is a member of the Computational Interaction and Robotics Laboratory in the Department of Computer Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, where his research focuses on defining robotic surgical proficiency, and optimizing patient safety by improving the quality of surgical training.

A native of New York, Dr. Akhavan graduated from Columbia University magna cum laude and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  Following General Surgery and Urology training at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Akhavan completed a Pediatric Urology fellowship at the Seattle Children's Hospital, where he was also an Instructor in Urology.
