• Myelokyphectomy in Spina Bifida: The Modified Fackler/Sagittal Shilla Technique
  Kyphosis occurs in about 10-15% of infants with myelomeningocele. The Modified Fackler/Sagittal Shilla technique is indicated for a child nine years of age or less with a fixed kyphosis and impaired sitting balance, recurrent skin ulcerations, respiratory depression, and/or pain. It combines aspects of both the Shilla technique described by McCarthy and the originally described Fackler technique for myelokyphosis. This procedure is associated with good long-term outcomes including an increased and sustained curve correction, decreased overall surgeries, height gain, and low complications.
